Allen Elementary, Soddy Daisy, TN: Grade 1- Using a Shared Reading Approach to Develop Early Literacy Skills
Shared reading is an approach to teaching reading in which a teacher a group of students come together to read, discuss, and learn from and about texts. The prime objective is to make meaning of the written text. Ann took the students through a first and second reading of the text in order to make meaning, introduce vocabulary and language structures and build listening skills. During subsequent readings, the students experienced lessons in fluency, print concepts, phonics, phonemic awareness, word study and opportunities to extend oral language. Finally, while working independently in pairs, the students used the language pattern of alliteration in the shared text to create their own class big book with each partner pair writing and illustrating a page in the book.
PROGRAM GOALS: To support the staff in their understanding of the use of the shared reading technique for developing early literacy skills through rhyme, rhythm, and repetition. To support the staff in understanding how to use writing extensions for student-centered, independent literacy stations through interactive demonstration lessons and use of high-quality shared reading materials. To demonstrate how to incorporate literacy device instruction into authentic reading and writing opportunities.
