Brown Middle School, Harrison TN: Grade 6 – Integrating Reading, Writing and Content Studies
Working directly with students in grade 6, Ann demonstrated a powerful strategy for meeting the demands of the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Writing: Key Word (Hoyt & Boswell, 2012). Ann modeled gathering relevant information by helping students identify key words and phrases while researching. After a partner retell of information learned, students began to use the words and phrases construct well organized and accurate summaries while avoiding plagiarism.
PROGRAM GOALS: To support the staff in teaching nonfiction writing across the curriculum while simultaneously analyzing content knowledge with ongoing, formative assessment opportunities.
